Trustee Biographies

Jim McHugh (Chair)

Jim has a background in primary education and enjoyed two periods as a Headteacher in Leeds and North Yorkshire. Jim went on to become an adviser for Education Bradford Schools Improvement service and is currently a National Leader of Governance.

Teresa Brooke

Teresa was born in UK but raised and educated New Zealand. Teresa trained and was a primary school teacher in New Zealand, Gibraltar and UK. Teresa came back to the UK and was an education officer for the National Trust at Fountains Abbey 15+ years but is now retired. Teresa has been a Governor at Western for 20+ years and also a Magistrate for 15 years.

Paul Cotton

Paul is the senior partner of Eversheds LLP office in Leeds, specialising in the employment law with over 20 years of experience in advising educational establishments and major FTSE 100 companies. Paul regularly provides training to clients and contributes to a variety of publications. He is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association. Paul has been a governor of HGS since 2012 and is currently vice chair.

David Hurcomb

David has held a number of senior posts in industry and is currently the CEO of NG Bailey group, a family owned engineering, construction and support services business, operating in a number of private and public sectors. A Chartered Accountant and Engineer, David lives in the Harrogate area with his wife and two sons, the eldest of whom is at Harrogate Grammar School.

Richard Sheriff

Richard started his teaching career in Leicester before moving to Leeds as a Head of Dept. Having worked as a Deputy Headteacher in a Bradford school he took up his first Headship in Leeds in 2001 before joining HGS as Headteacher in 2006. Richard is a National Leader of Education and until recently an Ofsted inspector.

Jayne Sorrell

Jayne has held the position of SEN Governor at Western Primary School since 2013 and also runs her own local driving school business. Previously, Jayne worked as Head of Buying for both Woolworths and Safeway, running seasonal teams and managing sales in excess of £100m at both companies.

Tricia Stowell

Tricia has degrees in Environmental Studies and Medicine. As a medical Practitioner she has worked in General Practice, Antenatal Care & Treatment of Substance Misuse during the past 20 years. Previously a primary school governor for 8 years & a governor at HGS since 2008, she is particularly involved with Safeguarding issues. Her 3 children all attended HGS from years 7 to 13.

Chris Tulley

Chris is a solicitor and partner of the global law firm DLA Piper. He is based in its Leeds office and specialises in intellectual property law. Chris has been a Governor at Oatlands Junior School since 1999, having been chair since 2008. In his spare time, Chris is a season ticket holder at Newcastle United and enjoys playing occasional golf rather badly.
