Trustee Biographies

Jim McHugh (Chair)

Jim has a background in primary education and enjoyed two periods as a Headteacher in Leeds and North Yorkshire. Jim went on to become an adviser for Education Bradford Schools Improvement service and is currently a National Leader of Governance.

Teresa Brooke

Teresa was born in UK but raised and educated in New Zealand. She trained and was a primary school teacher in New Zealand, Gibraltar and UK. Teresa was then an education officer for the National Trust at Fountains Abbey for 15+ years, a Governor at Western for 20+ years and also a Magistrate for 15 years but is now retired from all these posts.

Paul Cotton

Paul is the senior partner of Eversheds LLP office in Leeds, specialising in the employment law with over 20 years of experience in advising educational establishments and major FTSE 100 companies. Paul regularly provides training to clients and contributes to a variety of publications. He is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association. Paul has been a governor of Harrogate Grammar School since 2012 and is currently Chair.

David Hurcomb

David has held a number of senior posts in industry and is currently the CEO of NG Bailey group, a family owned engineering, construction and support services business, operating in a number of private and public sectors. A Chartered Accountant and Engineer, David lives in the Harrogate area with his wife and two sons, the eldest of whom is at Harrogate Grammar School.

Margaret Moyles

Margaret has worked in Leeds as a teacher and for 25 years as a headteacher in the Primary Phase. For the last 4 of those years she became a Consultant Headteacher working in schools in special measures or in a vulnerable position. Currently Margaret is working in Leeds as part of the Headteacher Support Service which looks to support the health and well-being of primary headteachers and in particular new or acting headteachers.

Kevin Paynes

Kevin held various leadership roles including Head of Post-16 Education and Deputy Headteacher in a secondary school in Bradford. In 2004, Kevin became an adviser within the School Improvement Service in Leeds where he currently leads the secondary team in their work to monitor, support and challenge schools across the city. In addition, Kevin has the strategic overview of the developing traded arm of the wider 0-19 learning improvement team.

Richard Sheriff

Richard started his teaching career in Leicester before moving to Leeds as a Head of Dept. Having worked as a Deputy Headteacher in a Bradford school he took up his first Headship in Leeds in 2001 before joining Harrogate Grammar School as Headteacher in 2006. Richard is a National Leader of Education and until recently an Ofsted inspector.

Jayne Sorrell

Jayne has held the position of SEN, Safeguarding and latterly the Chair of Governors at Western Primary School since 2010. She also runs her own local driving school business and is actively involved in team managing the junior athletes at Harrogate Harriers. Previously, Jayne worked as Head of Buying for both Woolworths and Safeway before relocating to Harrogate.

Tricia Stowell

Tricia has degrees in Environmental Studies and Medicine. As a medical Practitioner she has worked in General Practice, Antenatal Care & Treatment of Substance Misuse during the past 20 years. Previously a primary school governor for 8 years & a governor at Harrogate Grammar School (HGS) since 2008, she is particularly involved with Safeguarding issues. Her 3 children all attended HGS from years 7 to 13.

Chris Tulley

Chris recently retired as a solicitor and partner of the global law firm DLA Piper and now manages a family property business. Chris has been a Governor at Oatlands Junior School since 1999, having been chair since 2008. In his spare time, Chris is a season ticket holder at Newcastle United and enjoys playing occasional golf rather badly.
