Rossett School: From Challenge to Success

Rossett School joined our Trust in September 2023 following two successive Ofsted judgments of ‘Requires Improvement’. Just 20 months later, in May 2025, the school achieved a ‘Good’ rating in all areas. This was a remarkable turnaround and testament to what can be achieved through shared vision, strong leadership, and strategic support.

A New Chapter in Leadership

Recognising the need for rapid and sustained improvement, we secured early support from the Department for Education and oversaw the appointment of a new Headteacher, Tim Milburn, previously Deputy Headteacher and Safeguarding Lead at Harrogate Grammar School, and a former Rossett student, with a clear understanding of the community and a drive for excellence. His appointment, with strong support from his Senior Leadership Team, has been central to the school’s transformation.

Trust-Wide Support, Targeted Impact

Supported by our People, Estates, and School Improvement teams, the school focused on addressing key priorities: behaviour, culture, and teaching quality. The impact is clear: corridors are now calm, classrooms are focused and productive, and teachers are skilled in adapting instruction to meet every learner’s needs.

Raising Standards for All

Even within the first year, the impact was clear. Year 11 pupil progress was in line with national averages, not just overall, but across all prior attainment groups, including high, mid, and lower starting points. Particularly striking was the improvement among students eligible for free school meals, who, on average, achieved a full grade higher in each subject compared to previous years.

Happy and Welcoming

A Transformative Ofsted Inspection

In May 2025, Rossett School was rated ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted and Inspectors praised the school’s calm and purposeful atmosphere, strong leadership, and commitment to inclusive, high-quality education. The report reflects the dedication of colleagues, students, and the wider Trust community in driving rapid and sustainable improvement.

Alongside its improved Ofsted rating, Rossett School’s reputation within the local community has been transformed. Families, partners, and prospective students now recognise Rossett as a school with high expectations, strong leadership, and a supportive, inclusive culture. Confidence in the school has grown significantly, reflected in positive parent feedback and renewed pride among colleagues and students.

Looking Ahead

Rossett School’s progress not only secures its future but also opens new opportunities. The school is now set to co-develop Harrogate Sixth Form in partnership with Harrogate Grammar School, a flagship post-16 offer for the region.

This success story reflects the power of collective ambition, courageous leadership, and the Trust’s commitment to ensuring every school, and every student, can thrive.

Post-16 outcomes at Rossett School were also strong this year, and this new sixth form will offer students a broad and ambitious curriculum, with a wide range of pathways tailored to their aspirations and future destinations.
