This week, representatives from schools across Red Kite Learning Trust came together for our latest Youth Board session, hosted at Templenewsam Halton Primary School.
The meeting began with a discussion about transition, where pupils talked about what they were looking forward to and any worries they had about moving to a new class or a new school. Topics included making new friends, adapting to different routines and settling into a new environment.
Secondary school pupils played an important role in the session by sharing their own experiences of transition. They spoke honestly about how they felt before starting secondary school and offered reassurance, advice and encouragement to younger pupils.
One secondary pupil shared: "Starting secondary school can feel scary at first, but after a few weeks it becomes your new normal. The teachers are really friendly and there is always someone there to help if you need it."
A primary pupil added: "I'm looking forward to meeting new friends and trying new subjects. It sounds exciting and I'm not as worried about it now."
Pupils also spent time discussing inclusion and shared ideas linked to the Trust's Inclusion Pledge. Representatives spoke thoughtfully about what inclusion means to them and explored ways schools can help every child feel welcomed, valued and supported.

A highlight of the session was a leadership activity led by Chief Operating Officer Mr Timmis, who shared lessons from his 29-year career in the British Army. Reflecting on his time at Sandhurst College, he spoke about the importance of teamwork, leadership and values, encouraging pupils to aim high and demonstrating how qualities such as loyalty, humility and resilience can help individuals and teams succeed.
Pupils took part in an interactive activity using iPads to share the words and qualities they associate with effective leadership. Together, they explored leadership principles and discussed how good leaders respond to different situations. Mr Timmis also encouraged pupils to reflect on the meaning of willpower and the importance of learning from challenges and experiences.
Working in groups, pupils were given a range of scenarios and discussed how effective leaders might respond. Mr Timmis also introduced the idea of being smart, fit and caring, encouraging pupils to reflect on their own strengths in each of these areas and how they can continue to develop them both in and out of school.
The session concluded with pupils from Templenewsam Halton Primary School proudly giving representatives a tour of the school.
The session highlighted the value of bringing together pupil representatives from across our Trust, allowing children and young people to learn from one another, build confidence and ensure pupil voice remains at the heart of our community.
The Youth Board continues to provide an important platform for pupils to discuss key issues, share ideas and help shape experiences across our schools.
