Red Kite Foundation Reservoir Walk - Saturday 14 June

Posted 14th May 2025

All Red Kite Learning Trust and Red Kite Education colleagues are warmly invited to join us for our Red Kite Foundation Reservoir walk to raise funds through thankyü for the Red Kite Foundation.

The Red Kite Foundation provides funding to support our disadvantaged Red Kite Learning Trust pupils by giving them access to a wide variety of opportunities. We are delighted that already there are fantastic examples of the Foundation funding in action with great start-up support from our commercial partners at Pagabo.

We’re planning a fun day for all participants including a refreshment stop at Fewston Village Hall. Family members and dogs are welcome to join you. It should be a great chance to meet up with Red Kite colleagues wearing a flash of red ribbon!

You can choose from the three self-guided walk options with varying distances and terrain or join a timetabled group guided walk offering the same distance options:

The Fewston loop – a gentle circular walk which is mostly wide and well-surfaced with some short sections of path with fairly steep gradients– 4 miles in length.

The Fewston/Swinsty loop – a slightly longer walk of about 6.5 miles circling these two lovely reservoirs on well-maintained paths. Very suitable for pushchairs, mobility scooters and your loveable canine friends!

The three reservoir Fewston/Swinsty/Thruscross challenge – a tougher 15-miler with variable terrain and 688m elevation.

Participants are invited to select their preferred option for a self-guided walk and follow the route maps and information sheets below:

Fewston walking guide        Swinsty walking guide       Thruscross walking guide

For the 15-milers, there is a helpful map here showing the connection between the top of Fewston and the bottom of Thruscross which involves a footpath passing through woodland to the north of Blubberhouses then tracking the banks of the River Washburn.

There is also the option to join a group guided walk either at 9am (for the longer walk) or 10am, 11am or 12pm for the shorter walks.

Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis and we recommend car-sharing when possible. Swinsty Moor and Fewston Reservoir car park (LS21 2NP) is at the southern end of the Fewston Reservoir Embankment. Alternative parking is available at Stack Point car park (HG3 1SU), along the eastern edge of Swinsty Reservoir (2.2m height barriers). Parking at Thruscross is on Reservoir Road (HG3 4BB) next to the dam wall. (1.8m height barrier).

Limited minibus shuttles will be available from Harrogate Grammar School by prior arrangement.

There will be tea and cake refreshments and loo-stop available at Fewston Village Hall from 11.30am through until 4pm. The Hall is here at HG3 1SU or What 3 Words “counts.quibble.funky”! (Bring your own water and snacks for the walk itself!)

Please express your interest in the walk via the short form below which includes a disclaimer and a chance to express interest in the shuttle-bus option (subject to availability).

We are grateful to our partners at thankyü for facilitating sponsorship donations – simply share the thankyü URL or present the QR code to friends, family and business connections that might wish to sponsor you and your walking party. Please raise as much money as you can for this wonderful cause.

We will announce the schools that raise the most sponsorship and there will be special Trustee awards for the best efforts.

Please tie a red ribbon to your shoes or your outfits to identify yourselves as a Red Kite Foundation walker and say hello to your fellow fundraisers!

Let us know now by completing the short and easy form.
